Properties of twisted topological defects in 2D nematic liquid crystals

چکیده
Topological defects are one of the most conspicuous features liquid crystals. In two dimensional nematics, they have been shown to behave effectively as particles with both, charge and orientation, which dictate their interactions. Here, we study "twisted" that a radially dependent orientation. We find twist can be partially relaxed through creation annihilation defect pairs. By solving equations for motion calculating forces on defects, identify four distinct elements govern relative relaxational interacting topological namely attraction, repulsion, co-rotation co-translation. The interaction these effects lead intricate trajectories, controlled by setting relevant timescales.

Hydrodynamics of topological defects in nematic liquid crystals.
We show that backflow, the coupling between the order parameter and the velocity fields, has a significant effect on the motion of defects in nematic liquid crystals. In particular, the defect speed can depend strongly on the topological strength in two dimensions and on the sense of rotation of the director about the core in three dimensions.

We present a method of visualizing topological defects arising in numerical simulations of liquid crystals. The method is based on scientific visualization techniques developed to visualize second-rank tensor fields, yielding information not only on the local structure of the field but also on the continuity of these structures. We show how these techniques can be used to first locate topologic...
متن کاملNematic Liquid Crystals: Defects
There are two types of defects in the uniaxial nematic F phase: line defects (disclinations) and point defects (hedgehogs and boojums). These are reviewed at three levels: (i) experimental observations; (ii) topological classification; and (iii) curvature elasticity. The reader is referred to the textbooks on liquid crystals (Chandrasekhar 1992, de Gennes and Prost 1993), defects (Kltman 1983),...

متن کاملDefects in Nematic Liquid Crystals
Defects in liquid crystals are discontinuities in order parameter. In nematic liquid crystals (NLC) two types of stable defects exist: disclination lines and point defects. Defects formation depends on isotropic to nematic phase transition while their stability depends strongly on confining surface properties, surface geometry and presence of external field. Classical Frank’s model of director ...
